5 at-home wellness trends that are here to stay
During lockdowns, working out at home is the only realistic option. But what about beyond the pandemic? We spoke to Ben Lucas, director of Flow Athletic and Luke McLeod, director of Soul Alive about the trends that they believe are here to stay.
While at-home health and fitness is the only option for a number of Australian communities at the moment, according to the 2021 MindBody Wellness Index insights, virtual fitness seems to be a movement that will last well into the future.
The annual report found that even with gyms being reopened, 33 percent of Australians will still participate in live stream workouts or pre-recorded fitness at least once a week.
The report also found that the hybrid approach of doing their activity both in-person and online has been great in terms of providing Australians with even more opportunities to boost their wellness.
Pair that with the fact that more and more brands are innovating, and you have a lot of diversity to cater to all tastes.
Variety when it comes to online fitness
“When you have a physical gym or studio to go to, you have the excitement of having somewhere to go, interacting with your community and coach to look forward to and that’s why a lot of people will often stick to the same types of classes. When training at home, however, it can be harder to motivate yourself to do the workout. That’s why investing in platforms that offer variety when it comes to your fitness classes is key,” says Ben Lucas, director of Flow Athletic.
“We have found that the variety is what really keeps people interested and engaged. Most of our members won’t want to just do a HIIT or a strength class each day, they want to do HIIT one day, yoga the next, barre the next. Having something different to look forward to is what seems to keep them coming back. We also limit most classes to just 30 minutes as we find that is the length of time that most of the members will remain attentive. If they want to do more, there is plenty more for them to choose from.”
“Before the pandemic, I used to travel twice a year to LA or London to check out the latest innovations in fitness, and connected fitness is an interesting development in the industry,” says Lucas.
“From Peloton that offers streamed classes on bikes and treadmills, to Mirror that has the workouts set up on a mirror so you can feel like the instructor is in the room with you, there are some very interesting concepts coming out at the moment.”
“Masterclasses have been massive over the past 12-months as more people look to master the subjects that they are interested in. In fact, a number of masterclass-focused companies have cropped up lately, from painting to wine tasting and mindfulness workshops,” explains Luke McLeod, director of Soul Alive.
“They are a great resource for keeping people engaged and also teaching them in a more in-depth manner, which in turn helps them get more out of the activity they are interested in.”
He adds: “We have recently launched a four-week THRIVE program which is designed to teach people more about the principles of meditation and mindfulness and I was quite surprised by the number of preconceived ideas that people had been holding onto which inhibited them from getting the most out of their practice. I guess it is like anything though, learn to do it correctly and you will get a lot more out of it.”
Clever at-home gym solutions
“Last year it was near impossible to find gym equipment when the lockdowns first came into play. This year there are so many clever solutions coming about. From Flow Athletic renting out their spin bikes so people can keep spinning at home, to tech such as Vitruvian keeping us accountable and pushing us to get results,” says McLeod.
“There are also some interesting equipment options that just use water or sand to add resistance to your workout. HydroCore, for example, is a purpose-built bag that you fill with water. It uses the power of water dynamics to build stability, strength, and explosiveness.
“As the water is sloshing around every time you move the bag it keeps you wanting to move in the direction you are swinging it in. Overcoming the inertia builds head-to-toe stability. It’s a great option if you want to add resistance but you don’t want your space to be filled with weights.”
He adds: “It’s also good because you can take it outside with you pretty easily.”
According to the Black Dog Institute, 25-33 percent of the community have been experiencing high anxiety and stress and as a result, lots of people are looking for meditation and mindfulness solutions.
“Mindfulness practices have never been more important and are likely to continue to be a leading at-home wellness trend going forward,” says McLeod.
“The main mindfulness practices that have been picked up include online meditation classes, adult colouring, journaling, sound bathing.”
